Q&A with Bioflow Ambassador Katy Mclean

At the age of 16 Katy returned to her first passion and excelled, representing England for U18, U19, Academy and England A sides. At the age of 30 Katy is now the highest England point scorer of all time; having received more than 70 caps for her country she has also held the England captaincy for almost four years and led her nation to a famous IRB World Cup victory at the Jean Bouin stadium, Paris in August 2014.

Having achieved the ultimate honour in the 15 a side version of the game Katy was one of only 20 players in 2014 to be offered a full-time contract by the RFU to train with the England rugby 7s squad. Currently living close to the 7s training base in Guildford, Surrey she is now focussed on a new challenge – pursuing a place at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.

In 2015, Katy became an ambassador for Bioflow and kindly agreed to answer a few questions for us.

At what age did you get interested in and start playing/participating in rugby?

I started playing rugby when I was 5 because it was really big in my family. My dad was a major influence on getting me involved in the sport.

In order to get where you are currently what attributes would you say have helped you?

I think my ability to keep going and be resilient when times got tough. It would have been really easy to quit but I kept working hard on my areas of weakness.

Training is obviously a large contributing factor to your success. How long/often do you train?

We train 4 days week when in programme doing a mixture of weight lifting, speed training, skills, aerobic and anaerobic endurance sessions. The sessions generally range from 30 mins to 90 mins and we could do anything up to 4 sessions a day.

Can you describe how you recover from training, do you have a specific routine or product that you use?

I always try and wear my Bioflow band when recovering but will also use the pool, yoga and recovery garments to enhance it.

What is the greatest sporting achievement of your career so far?

Undoubtedly captaining England to a World Cup win in Aug 2014.

What are your plans for the coming year and where would you like to see yourself?

I would love to go the Olympics with GB rugby 7s. I hopefully see myself competing in the 2017 women’s World Cup in Ireland.

What advice would you give to a young sportsperson entering into the rugby field?

Try lots of different sports when you’re younger and stick with the one you enjoy the most. It’s important to enjoy what you do.
